Detects domestic abuse (intimate partner violence) in women in healthcare settings.
INSTRUCTIONS
- This tool starts with the WAST-Short, which is used as a brief screening tool for intimate partner violence (IPV). If positive, additional questions are available to provide further insight into the patient’s condition.
- If the short form is negative, the clinical utility of asking further questions remains unclear.

Judith B. Brown, PhD, is a professor in the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University in London, Ontario. She was made an honorary member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 1996 and was a co-recipient of the organization’s Best Original Research Article Award in 2009. Dr. Brown’s primary research is focused on patient-centered care and health system change.
